“I want to know who did this to her,” Mimi said, her arm around her sister’s shoulders.

We had brought Rory out into the living room. She sat on a sofa, her sister beside her, blinking repeatedly. Benjamin hovered nearby like a giant well-dressed cloud, his expression dark. The Wyatts stood near the fireplace while Jason had slumped in an armchair.

Gamma had already checked Rory for injuries, claiming that she’d been a nurse. Really, she had combat training in medicine—a brief overview that would help her identify injuries in the field in case she was in danger.

Rory had the mildest of concussions. Rest, water and aspirin would keep her healthy until we could get her down the mountain to see a real doctor.

She also had no idea who’d attacked her.

“I’m serious,” Mimi said. “It could only have been one of us, and I demand that my sister’s attacker come forward now. Reveal who you are.”

As if that’s going to work. If only the justice system worked like that and the bad guys just turned themselves in after they committed a crime with a sorry and a promise not to do it again.

“This is getting us nowhere,” Benjamin said, glaring at Mimi.

She gave him the same treatment back, rubbing her sister’s arm frantically. “Well, if you have a better idea, I’m all ears.”

Benjamin sighed. “Rory, tell us what you can remember again. Go through it slowly. Try to remember every detail.”

“What’s that going to help?” Mimi asked.

“She might have forgotten something important.” Benjamin shrugged.

I happened to agree with him, but I wasn’t going to reveal that, of course. Benjamin didn’t need anyone on his side. He was doing a great job of being on his own side.

“Rory?” I prompted.

She raised her head and looked directly at me. “I didn’t see who they were,” she said, and then blinked again.

Was it just me or was she doing something weird with the blinking. That or she’d been hit on the head harder than we’d thought.

“See?” Mimi gestured to her sister. “She doesn’t remember anything. You’re going to cause her distress by trying to force her to remember.”

“It’s important that she does,” Benjamin said. “We clearly have someone malicious on the loose.”

Mr. Wyatt grimaced. He hadn’t exactly been a believer about Kate’s murder. But the attack on Rory? That was irrefutable.

“How do we know she didn’t just fall?” he asked.

Everyone looked at him like he’d lost his mind. Even his wife.

“I heard the door open behind me,” Rory said. “And then I… Well, I don’t remember anything after that except pain. And then I woke up.”

“So they attacked you from behind?” I asked.

“Yes.” Rory blinked at me.

Blink. Closed eyes. Blink. “They attacked me from behind.”

“And you didn’t hear anything? Smell anything?” I asked.

“No. I didn’t hear or smell anything else.” Closed eyes. Open eyes. Closed eyes. Open eyes. Closed eyes. These were longer, not blinks, but actual periods where Rory kept her eyes closed.

“What about seeing anything out of the ordinary in the room?” Benjamin asked.
